English to Russian translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / chinese writing
English term or phrase: characters
Aesthetic considerations seem to have interested the Chinese from the early beginnings of their writing. Simple nouns were developed first, and the written language slowly matured and became enriched as characters were invented to express feelings, actions, colors, sizes, and types.Chinese characters are logograms, graphic signs that represent an entire word.

Вот ключевой элемент:
Chinese characters are ... signs that represent an ENTIRE WORD.

Речь не просто о знаках или символах, которых хватает и в других языках, речь конкретно об иероглифах, которые, будучи знаками, представляют собой целые слова.

agree  Tatiana Pelipeiko: Да, я бы тоже предпочла здесь "графические символы", знаки. Судя по приведенном отрывку, их конкретное описание как иероглифов возникнет позже.

Explanation:
Исходя из контекста, я бы в первый раз употребила "символы" - as characters were invented to express feelings, actions, colors, sizes...

А в последней фразе речь идет уже конкретно о Chinese characters... Там уже уместно употребить "иероглифы".
