В техвузах лекторов не встретить. Старший преподаватель, однако, меня несколько отпугивает, потому что, например, у нас на кафедре в Университете Британской Колумбии был некий тип на должности "Senior Instructor". Unlike all the junior, medium and full professors, he was not expected to do any research and/or publishing, but had to teach and that was it (huge teaching loads too!). Kinda dead-end jobbette. Below the Assistant Professor are Instructors, Teaching Assistants, Tutors (in North America: in England, Tutor may be even a Full Professor) and the like. I would risk and translate it as Starshij Prep., and the hell with Senior Instructor! But Associate Prof. IS Доцент and nothing else, do not listen to the songs of other sirens!

Я сама некоторое время работала в институте. Официальной должности "преподаватель," по крайней мере на нашей кафедре, не было. Были "ассистент", "старший преподаватель", "доцент" и "профессор". So which is which? If we had to translate that back into English, what would ‘aссистент кафедры’ be equivalent to, say, in the US? ‘Assistant Professor’? What about "старший преподаватель"? Is there anybody below Assistant Professor? Thank you very much for your time.

In the States it is usually but not exclusively "assistant prof.", while in England it is "lecturer" (associate prof. = reader; full prof = prof.). In Russia, I repeat, Assistent Prof. is simply Prepodavatel', Lektor. But associate is definitely Ditzent. Адъюнкт Профессор, повторяю, = Adjunct Professor, not Associate.

but I've been all three of those (still am a so-called "full professor"). Moreover, for various reasons had translated my CV in Russian too. So, please take my word for it:
Assistant Professor = Лектор/Преподаватель
Associate Professor = Доцент (Адъюнкт, почучик, это не то’с! for, rare as it may be, there also exists a title of Adjunct Professor)
Professor = Профессор

Those are the ranks. Tenure has nothing to do with them: one may be tenured or not while occupying any of those positions. Cheers.

В США три градации для постоянного профессорского состава (от младшего к старшему): Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor. Если говорить об аналогии, то Assistant Professor - это доцент, Professor - это профессор, а вот Associate Professor... такого в России нет. Ну наверное будет что-то типа "старший доцент" или " младший профессор"??? :-).

"Адъюнкт-профессор" -- это Adjunct Professor, т.е. человек не имеющий постоянной позиции на факультете. Часто адъюнктами становятся либо профессора с других факультетов или университетов (у нас несколько адъюнктов-профессоров с инженерных факультетов), либо "визитеры" (ну там сотрудники частных фирм, поэты, художники и пр.).
