IMHO

The grading system used by the EPFS Steering Committee corresponds with the grading system used by all NERC Services and Facilities. If an Alpha grade is awarded, the application is of high scientific merit and is of such novelty and timeliness and promise as to be likely to make a signifiant contribution to the subject. Applications graded Alpha are categorised further from Alpha 5 (science of the highest quality) to Alpha 1.

Alpha Grade A5
Science of exceptional merit and originality expected to make a major impact on scientific knowledge
Alpha Grade A4
Excellent original science with a high likelihood of producing significant advances in the understanding of the subject
Alpha Grade A3
High quality science likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of the subject area
Alpha Grade A2
Very good science likely to produce significant advances in understanding the subject
Alpha Grade A1
Good science capable of making a significant contribution to understanding the subject
Beta Grade
If a Beta grade is awarded, the application is for research which will add to understanding and is worthy of support, but which may not be of such quality or urgency as to have a significant influence on the development of the research area. Beta grades are not categorised further.
Reject
If a Reject grade is awarded, the application is for research which is flawed in the scientific content or is repetitious of other work, or in its present form is judged not to be worth pursuing, or which though possibly having sound objectives appears to have serious technical difficulties.
