English term or phrase:Dry type sprinklers
1. Dry type sprinklers
They use water. There are two general types of sprinkler systems, "wet pipe systems" and "dry pipe systems". In wet systems the piping is permanently pressurised with water. When a sprinkler operates, in reaction to the heat of a fire, water discharges through the sprinkler. In dry systems, used where there is a risk of freezing, the piping is pressurised with air. When a sprinkler operates, the air is discharged through the sprinkler, which creates a pressure drop at the system control valves. These then open automatically to allow water to flow to the open sprinkler (or sprinklers). Sometimes we have a wet system where just a small section is subject to freezing. This is where "dry sprinklers" are used. The length of pipe feeding the sprinkler is not filled with water, so there is no risk of freezing, but it allows water to pass when the sprinkler operates, i.e. when the bulb bursts in response to the heat of the fire.
