Ель Дугласа - высокие стройные ели с мягкими, чуть сплющенными иголками. Кора темно-коричневая, толстая и очень грубая, покрытая глубокими продольными трещинами. Шишки с длинными «ресницами» чешуек свисают с веток, в отличие от торчащих вверх шишек «настоящих» елей
