Would it be correct to transalte the word "log" as "кругломерная древесина"? Please notice, here the word "log" does not mean "балансы". |

Russian сортимент includes sawlog(s), which can be viewed as anti-pulpwood in terms of diameter
Conclusion:
'бревна' or 'объёмы бревен' as 'logs' or 'log volumes' are correct in a log-yard context, even though these words may sound a bit unprofessional in a pulp-mill context

As for КРУГЛОМЕРНАЯ ДРЕВЕСИНА, it is used in contrast to технологическая щепа in context related to storage of raw -materials

Explanation:
Очень странно читать Pulp mills consume large volumes of logs" т.к. известно, что целлюлозу делают именно из балансов (pulpwood).
Но извернуться все же можно.
Что такое бревно (log)? По определению это "Круглый сортимент для использования в круглом виде, за исключением тонкомерной рудничной стойки, жердей и кольев, или в качестве сырья для выработки пиломатериалов общего назначения и специальных видов лесопродукции"
Примеры бревен - рудстойка, мачты, столбы (без переработки) и всякие пиловочные бревна. Ясно, что целлюлозу из бревен не делают.
Но что такое балансы? - по определению "Круглые или колотые сортименты для производства целлюлозы и древесной массы"
А сортимент - Лесоматериал установленного назначения.
Т.е. если обобщить балансы до сортиментов, то все будет правильно, ерунды в переводе не будет (т.к. балансы - это подвид сортимента, то потребление балансов означает потребление сортимента).
Но переводится ли log как сортимент? Да. Открываем отраслевой словарь, то бишь ГОСТ 17462 "Продукция лесозаготовительной
промышленности Термины и определения", и читаем
17. Сортимент D. Sortiment E(nglish). Log - Лесоматериал установленного назначения

Asker: I know what is LOG in English. In general, it translates to Russian as КРУГЛЫЙ ЛЕСОМАТЕРИАЛ. However, my question was whether it would be possible to translate LOG as КРУГЛОМЕРНАЯ ДРЕВЕСИНА. I myself do not consider it accurate translation. In fact, I am not sure I know which materials called КРУГЛОМЕРНАЯ ДРЕВЕСИНА. And yes, we are talking about a log yard.
Сортимент — это круглый, колотый или пиленый лесоматериал установленного назначения, соответствующий требованиям стандартов или технических условий.
