Похоже, что поверхность бляшек может разрушаться с помощью пептидов (коротких белков), проникающих в бляшку и подрывающих ее структурную целостность. В результате целые белковые молекулы будут отрываться и покидать поверхность бляшки. Эти небольшие пептиды называются разрушители бета-слоев.
