При бета-талассемиях избыточные альфа-цепи глобина не образуют тетрамеры, а связываются с мембраной эритроцитов и повреждают ее. Тяжесть бета-талассемии зависит от характера мутации. При одних мутациях (бета0) не образуется никаких бета-цепей, в то время как при других (бета+) некоторое их количество все же синтезируется. У смешанных гетерозигот наблюдаются промежуточные формы болезни.
