Мне кажется, дело в следующем. Это углубление в земле является разломом, который позволяет получить доступ к различным геологическим слоям земной коры - и по ним определять, что здесь было столько-то лет назад. В том числе была здесь суша или океан в тот или иной период. И вот эти слои, деформированные, как сказал Салават, в результате каких-то там геологических процессов и оказавшиеся на поверхности, ученые и изучают.
