English to Russian translations [PRO] Government / Politics / Refugee status | | English term or phrase: Azul | | I came across this in a translation about refugees, viz. when a mother forgot to mention that her child was an Azul when handding her to the authorities, and the child was therefore deprived of certain allowances. I'm inclined to think that the author (an average writer, I believe) meant "a refugee, ASYLum seeker" by this. Ideas? btw, this is not necessarily an English word. Moderators may change this if needed. |
| | Clarification request(s) and responsePeter Shortall: 11:28am May 12, 2006: Hi Ara, do we know the nationality of the mother and child? Perhaps the writer left the word unchanged for some reason... I've come across various words in different languages for "asylum-seeker" (e.g. azilyant, asilant and variations on that theme) but - Peter Shortall: 11:30am May 12, 2006: never "azul", which I believe is Spanish for "blue" (could be coincidence, or maybe that word has another meaning entirely in Spanish). If it were "azil" I'd say it was likely, but "azul" sounds rather strange! - Oleksandr Melnyk: 11:47am May 12, 2006: Посмотрите http://www.vorota.de/ART111.AxCMS -

Asker: I think this is what was meant. The author - a refugee herself - could've didn't have to spell flawlessly (there're other minor spelling mistakes).

| azul проситель (политического) убежища
Explanation: Well... it may well not mean asylum-seeker at all, but assuming it is, this is the translation I have always come across, e.g.

I think it's important to highlight the distinction between "asylum-seeker" and "refugee", which in the UK at least are two different things. An "asylum-seeker" is an applicant for asylum who has been allowed to remain in the country of application until a decision is made on the claim.
A "refugee" is someone whose application has been accepted and is recognised as a "refugee" under the terms of the 1951 Geneva Convention:

I think it might also help to know which country this situation is occurring in... the rights of asylum-seekers vary from country to country, but in the UK an unaccompanied asylum-seeking child would have largely the same rights as any other child with no legal guardian (with one exception: they are granted leave to remain only until their eighteenth birthday, when they must either leave or apply for indefinite leave to remain, which is not automatically granted). Do you know which rights this child does not have - or why the mother is handing the child over to the authorities?

The child care project is funded by the IELU, the local Azul congregation, the local city government and other agencies, but LPGM is providing $8,500, the majority of the money needed for the first year of operation.
