Clarification request(s) and response
xxxIreneN: 7:44pm Oct 24, 2004: Thank you indeed, Asker, but in some way I feel bad:-) I fed on Gary's knowledge and only put it in Russian words. It's a painful task to grade questions, right? I have it awaiting.. Thank you, Gary. As long as we hepled, I guess... -
elessenda (asker): 8:19pm Oct 24, 2004: I agree - it's awful to choose and it's very difficult (it's one of the reason why I use KudoZ very-very rarely :( I always sorry about other answerers and feel guilty. I would choose everybody if possible...Especially Gary...
Thank you very much nevertheless...

dUnk tank

Explanation:
Sorry, I can't explain this well in Russian.
It's a large vat (бассейн?) of water. A person (often a public figure doing this for charity) sits on a sort of "diving board" above the tank. People pay for an opportunity to thrown a ball at a target. It the ball hits the targe, the board retracts and the person falls into the tank, to the amusement of all

I believe this was also used as a form of public punishment in the colonial era of the US, and
this may be the more likely intended meaning: a person would be strapped to
such a \"diving board\" and lowered into a бак с водой until they were gasping for
air.

как форма наказания, чаще всего, \"dunking board\".
похож на форму высшей меры наказаний ведьм,
а в данном случае...до смерти!

P.S. It would be wrong to give me the points since I didn\'t even
attempt to explain it in Russian. As an English-English question,
maybe...

Heck, I\'ve never heard of бадья! Баня, yes, but not бадья!

agree Yuri Geifman: бак с водой... мой племянник как-то раз таким образом свою училку искупал :-)

agree Kirill Semenov: nice explanation. I doubt we have anything similar in Russian culture. If I will able to find a wording for it, I'll add it to this comment or to the Asker's field :)

agree Sara Noss: Also used in the UK & known as a 'ducking stool'. How I suffered in those days! ;-) http://www.godshaer.co.uk/duckingstool.htm

-> Quite right, as I recalled later: "stool" is more likely than "board"
