English term or phrase: compelling compassionate grounds
immigration interview
Moira Welch
Russian translation:весомые (веские) гуманные соображения
Explanation:
The way I see it, this means that denial of the claimant's request should cause him/her undue hardship; therefore, the request should be granted on "compelling compassionate grounds".

I found this a problem to translate - in English "compassionate grounds" can just relate to domestic problems, children being ill, marriage breaking up, etc. (as in "compassionate leave"). The occasion was the gay partner of a man, wanting to enter UK as a spouse - and unless he could show "compelling compassionate grounds" had to be refused under current immigration law. There was no question of his being in danger in his home country. "gumanitarniy" is probably close, and short, enough. Thanks.

Skloneniye k osnovaniyam dlya sochuvstviya

Explanation:
Склонение к основаниям для сочувствия. As far as I understand, it means that a person being interviewed may provide any support, or act in any way, in favour of her/him so that an interviewer can ultimately accept her/his eligibility.

Веские основания для сострадания (для иммиграции)

Explanation:
Though I suggest above Веские основания для сострадания, I'd rather not use this leteral translation, and would write Веские основания для иммиграции since if a person has compelling compassionate grounds, then he must also have compelling grounds for immigration.

гуманитарные обстоятельства, требующие немедленного вмешательства

Explanation:
This term is applied to a prospective refugee who lodged an application for a refugee status overseas and is in imminent danger in his/her country. Another possible application of this term: a situation where a woman who has been granted a spouse visa has to divorce her husband because of family violence. In that case she can be allowed to stay (at least here, in Australia) permanently on compelling compassionate grounds even if she otherwise would have to leave the country after divorce. So the translation offered by Alla Itkis is even better for the second situation. I would not recommend to use Russian word сочувствие in legal documents as it rather belongs to a glossary of emotions and not that of the law.
