Volumes are derived via a post-processing technique, which uses complex virtual ray methods to produce three-dimensional objects from a stack of images. The original images are stacked one on top of the other. A classification is applied to visualise a selected surface within the volume.
You can select from the following volume render modes:
• Volume rendering (VR): represents the shape and form of anatomical structures by applying an opacity and colour map to the selected voxels.
• Shaded volume rendering (SVR): represents the shape and form of anatomical structures by applying an opacity and colour map to the voxels. Additional shading gives a greater visual perception of depth.
• Iso-surface rendering (ISR): represents the shape and form of anatomical structures. Only voxels of a single value (called "threshold" value) are displayed. Iso-surface rendering applied a colour on these voxels and uses additional shading to give a greater visual perception of depth.

Если Вам не нравится "компьютерный" термин. А так, полностью согласен с Леваном, термин устойчивый, хотя почти никто не знает, что же там всё-таки рендерится:).

Volume rendering - объёмное тонирование, когда на изображение накладываются карты прозрачности и цвета

Shaded VR - то же самое, нос тенями, что и придаёт псевдо трёхмерность

Iso-surface rendering - видны только воксели, имеющие определённое, граничное значение, они выделяются отдельным цветом

т.е. обычная работа с фотографией, к процессу X-raying уже не имеет отношения.
