Medical - Medical (general) / MSDS
English term or phrase: ALC
Inhalation 4 hour ALC: > 709,000 ppm in rats
ALC = approximate lethal concentration.

Explanation:

ALC approximate lethal concentration
ALD approximate lethal dose

The approximiate lethal dose (ALD) to rats following oral administration of nine chemicals was determined. The ALD (lowest dose at which death was produced) for each chemical was used to define the general order of toxicity as being either extremely, highly, moderately, slightly, or practically non-toxic. For each of the nine chemicals tested, the category indicated by the ALD was identical with the category determined in the more extensive LD50 studies. In this study, an average of 6.8 rats was needed to determine the ALD while an average of 56.3 rats was needed to determine the LD50.

http://orgchem.colorado.edu/safety/tox.html
Hazards of Chemicals: Toxicology Nomenclature
LD and LC
LD50 is lethal dose 50. This is the single dose of a toxic substance administered by any route (other than by inhalation) that causes the death of 50% of an animal population. LDLo is lethal dose low—the lowest dose of a substance reported to have caused death in humans or animals.

LC50 is lethal concentration 50. It is the concentration of a material in air that kills 50% of a group of test animals when administered as a single exposure in a specific time period (usually 1 hour). Note that lethal concentration values are used when the route of administration is by inhalation (rather than oral, dermal, etc.) whereas LD values are used for all routes except inhalation. LC values are often expressed as parts of material per million parts of air (ppm).

http://www.bugwood.org/PAT/Glossary.html
Approximate Lethal Concentration (ALC) – An estimate of the concentration of a pesticide in air or water which is capable of killing a test animal. See also… MLC
Approximate Lethal Dose (ALD) – An estimate of the dose of a pesticide which is necessary to kill a test animal. See also… MLD

http://refrigerants.dupont.com/Suva/en_US/pdf/k05740.pdf
The Approximate Lethal Concentration (ALC) and the
Lethal Concentration in “x” percent (LCx) tests in laboratory
animals are often used to assess acute lethality. During the
ALC or LCx tests, the animals are monitored for any clinical
signs that might signal adverse effects in the test animals,
including irritation, behavioral changes, anesthetic effects
etc. The test typically includes a 4-hr inhalation with a 2-wk
follow up period. If the acute lethality endpoint were used
to set exposure standards, appropriate uncertainty, extrapolation
or safety factors would be applied to values determined
in experimental animals.

Telomer B:
Inhalation ALC: 6 mg/L in rats
Oral LD50: >17,000 mg/kg in rats
Telomer B is not a skin irritant, is untested for eye
irritancy, and is not a skin sensitizer in animals. A
single inhalation exposure produced labored respiration,
weight loss, salivation, and prostration. A single
ingestion exposure produced labored respiration, weight
loss, and prostration.

Reference information:
Acute toxicity (usually just 'toxicity') is measured in two common ways, the Approximate Lethal Concentration (ALC) or the LC50. The ALC is a measure of the level at which lethal effects may begin to occur, while the LC50 is determined as the concentration that kills 50% of test animals (during the time specified for the test). The ALC is therefor a more conservative or safer estimate of the toxicity of a gas.
