Здесь речь идет о стерилизации, т.е. защите от бактерий, а не о их фильтрации, иначе если бы, например, завернутые в эту бумагу хирургические инструменты, простерилизовали, а потом она стала бы "фильтровать", пропускать бактерии обратно под wrap, смысла в стерилизации не было бы.

Вы совершенно правы, что засомневались: речь идет именно об одностороннем барьере - самой приходилось стерилизовать инструменты, для этого используется специальная мелкопористая бумага/материя. Об ее свойствах и идет речь в статье.
