Это конечно не "допуски и посадки" из моей далёкой жизни студента-будущего инженера, но идея та же.
Просто tolerance - это допуск "плюс-минус", а clearance - только "плюс", то есть именно зазор.
Как перевести "посадку" кроме fit или seating?
Вспомнил - "negative tolerance".
