Any of the roof supports could have been made into control supports, because they all had the facility for overstroke on the side shield rams.

What I wanted actually was not a quotation from Lingvo (I do have Lingvo myself and generally I know what the word *suppport* means), and not two googlings (I can use google myself as well). You needn't have wasted you time to doing things I have done myself before asking this kudoz. I wanted a piece of advice from a translator experienced in texts related to mining industry, maybe some explanation about these control supports, what they do and why they are different from ordinary supports. Thank you, anyway.
