"It went exactly that route: directly into the **garage-y realm**. People were told, 'Here's x amount of dollars,' which was maybe 1/20th of what they would pay to record an album before. At the same time, recording technology, with the introduction of the Alesis ADAT and so on, was very affordable. People with no experience in recording could suddenly record themselves in a place that they called a studio, and did."
