English term or phrase: trackway
I find it fascinating to study the trackways of these animals because they represent these paleo-polaroids, or snapshots in time

следы
Explanation:
A trackway is an ancient route of travel for people and/or animals. In biology, a trackway can be a set of impressions in the soft earth, usually a set of footprints, left by an animal. A fossil trackway is the fossilized imprint of a trackway. Trackways have been found all over the world. They are especially valuable for determining some characteristics of life-forms, such as behavior.

Explanation:

neutral  Maria Fokin: what evidence of migration other than tracks are you thinking of? this is paleontolgy not anthropology. tracks are preserved in large numbers in sedimentary rocks (ex. dinasour footprints). there is a lot more of them than actual dinasour bones, actually.

neutral  Maria Fokin: this is a bit specific it implies motion below the surface (traces of burrowing) and trackways are actually mostly movements on the surface. but it does depend a bit on what animal is refered to in the context :-)

Reference information:

if you are still dealing with worms: следы ползания is probably more accurate.
but следы передвижения is more general
