This means that the field at the tip is expressed by E = βVg and that the contribution of the collector voltage to the field γVc is insignificant. The reasons for this type of operation are that gate diameters are of the order of 1 µm and the tips are in the plane of the gates, which causes significant shielding of the collector field from the emitters, and that the emitter-to-collector distances are of the order of 0.1 cm, which for operating voltages as high as several thousand volts still results in γVc << βVg.
