English term or phrase:Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.
Been trying to translate this famous pun by Groucho Marx for days - no satisfactory result. Do you know if it has been translated - or can you offer your translations?
типа: “сахар высыпают в сахарницу, а аллергии высыпают на теле“. И т.п. Но я старался сохранить оттенок полета или хотя бы стремительного движения свойственный оригиналу. Так что по крайней мере первая часть выражения остается практически без изменения и по-русски.
Mikhael, (you, too, Anna), you are correct. It's a play on words как and любят. It makes no sense in a literal transalation, at least to my feeble knowledge of both languages. Everything is not reverse translatable, believe me I know! Mehi, leave it in English and let your client look it up or figure it out. Sometimes I have faith in my client's intelligence, other times I wonder.....
Нет, в английском я вижу этот пан, но при переводе на русский и тот и другой вариант звучат совершенно бессмысленно, поэтому, я думаю, перевод даже не столь важен. Вы правы, наверное лучше употребить вариант с мушками, но в луюбом случае, на русском не будет никакого смысла.
А вы можете перед переводом написать пояснение, что-нибудь вроде: практически непереводимая с английского игра слов: "время летит как стрела, фрукты летят как банан. Мне кажется, эквивалент на русском будет найти очень сложно.

"Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana," is a saying, often interpreted humorously, that is used in linguistics as an example of a garden path sentence and syntactic ambiguity, and in word play as an example of punning, double entendre, and antanaclasis.
A fairly common variant is, "Time flies like the wind; fruit flies like a banana." The semicolon is sometimes replaced by a full stop, or the second half may be preceded by the word but. Some versions have bananas instead of a banana.
