English to Russian translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature / Literature | | English term or phrase: the saddest of the bellpush names | In another city those little private havens would be full of purpose, and Marlborough
Buildings does of course house its quota of business people, civil servants, students,
even a writer or two. But Bath lacks the tautness of a truly functional city, a city that
fits its own buildings, and when I stroll back there in the evening I often think what a
melancholy diffusion of energy that cliff face represents. How many of those
windows, I think, represent not a purpose, but a lack of it! Widows, childless
divorcees, elderly unmarried ladies, dilettanti, pensioners, the retired - Bath is full of
lonely people without occupations, counting the days until their grandchildren come
to call, killing the evening with television, gin or marijuana, plotting another bridge
party, waiting for bingo, or setting off down the hill to listen to the Pump Room Trio for
an hour. Every city has its share of the purposeless, but by the nature of things Bath
has more than most, and the saddest of the bellpush names, I think, are those whose
faded pride lives on in a polished but almost indecipherable brass plate, or a visiting
card engraved in the deep copperplate of long ago.

1 day15 hrs confidence:
