façade, was in the shape of a lighthouse. It was a large tube- shaped
structure made of cement blocks, perhaps sixty feet high, wide at
the base and narrowing as it went upward, and painted in red and
white barber- pole stripes.

Мне кажется, в данном контексте переводить с упоминанием вывески парикмахерской нет смысла по трем причинам.
Во-первых, красно-белая полосатая окраска и так характерна для маяков, и русскоязычного читателя упоминание парикмахерской может только ввести в заблуждение.
Во-вторых, можно с высокой вероятностью предполагать, что здание, похожее на маяк, было на самом деле окрашено в горизонтальные полосы, а не в наклонные, как barberpole, и аналогия у автора весьма приблизительна.
В-третьих, в русском языке есть другая аналогия для полосатой окраски: пограничный столб. Я бы использовал либо ее, либо просто оставил "красные и белые полосы" без пояснений. |
