Context:

An alternative to a needle is to wrap the last inch of yarn with some masking or cellophane tape and to cut it at an angle to make a point. Other needle alternatives are a bobby pin or a pipe cleaner fastened to the yarn.

Похоже, простая себе заколка. "Закрепить пряжу можно не только на игле, но и на заколке..." или вот на этом pipe cleaner ("ершик для трубы", по Multitran ;)) Да где только нельзя, голь на выдумки хитра. :)

отбить прямую = взять длинный шнурок, извалять его в толчёном меле, натянуть между двумя точками на стене (между которыми нужно провести прямую линию), (при помощи подмастерья или жены) оттянуть шнурок и резко его отпустить. шнурок шлёпнет по стенке, после чего на ней останется белая (меловая) ровная линия. берем кисточку и красим.
