The ministry of presence is not necessarily even about being an active participant in the event taking place, but by being there to give support to those who are in the activity. Your presence is a testimony to your support of what they are doing. Have you ever thought about church going in that sense? Rather than going to church for what you can get out of it, have you ever thought about going to church to support what happens there? Has it ever dawned upon you that your presence is important for others in the church?

Here is a practical way to reflect on the power of presence. Think about how we attend long, arduous dance, piano, band (fill in your own personal torment) recitals of young students who are just learning the very basic rudiments of their art. Such events can be painful, if judged solely on their artistic merit. But joy is often found by “being there.” We often find unexpected and unanticipated joy in simply “being there.” We are surprised by joy in their amazing artistic progression since “last time.” We are surprised by the joy of discovering another child who has great potential. And we are often surprised by the joy of the big hug and sincere “thank you” that comes from the budding artist. But more importantly, our presence as their parent, uncle, former teacher, or neighbor gives courage and hope to the young artist. Presence is a subtle message, but it is a very, very important message. Our Presence affirms others. It says to others that they are on the right track and that we support their good decisions. Our Presence says to others that they are being good stewards of their time, energy, and gifts.
