Explanation:
Barnes & Noble typifies the traditional distribution model, one that AMR Research calls "buy-hold-sell," where a company buys product in advance, holding it until it is sold. Not only does 75 percent of total inventory carrying costs amount to a huge capital investment, but it also grows larger as Barnes & Noble becomes more successful. This heavy investment in inventory and the necessity for it to grow as the company grows points to a fundamental failing of the land-based business model: the land-based model consumes capital. Whether the investment is in additional inventory or new brick and mortar stores, continued success requires the additional consumption of capital.

The same cannot be said of the Internet business model. For instance, Amazon.com's suppliers finance nine times more than the value of Amazon's inventory, an inventory which corresponds to 15 days of sales only. Embracing a new, low-inventory distribution model, one AMR calls ***"sell-source-ship,"*** where companies sell product, source it from their suppliers, and ship it to the customer, defraying inventory holding costs and breaking away from the dependency on capital consumption, Amazon.com has a number of distinct advantages over its land-based competitors:
