Za pola veka primene kontejnerskog transporta obim transporta se značajno uvećao i razvijena je nova manipulativna oprema za kontejnere u okviru terminala. Svakodnevno je u svetskim kontejnerskim lukama tokom
1994. godine ostvaren prosećan dnevni pretovar od 900 TEU. Pod TEU podrazumva se dvadesetostopni kontejner kao ekvivalentna jedinica, tj. 1 TEU = 20' ISO kontejner.
