They are relatively-small refractive differences within the overall background, and by definition they bend light rays in any direction other than the 'normal' direction z.... Schlieren occur in solids, liquids, and gases. They may result from temperature changes, high-speed flows, or the mixing of dissimilar materials.
Usually the term is used in plural and it is also used in the phrase 'schlieren photography'. |
