English term or phrase: Hide
Hi!

I'm translating a text about anglosaxons and I need to know how to render 'hide' as a piece of land. Here goes an extract to set the context:

"The division between the two was strictly in terms of land owned. A man could only be a thane if he owned at least five hides of land (a hide was defined as the amount of land necessary to provide a living for one family)"

Thanks in advance!

antigua medida de tierra entre 24 y 49 hectáreas
Explanation:
Archaeology Dictionary: hide

[De]

An early medieval measure of land area, which at the Domesday Survey in ad 1086 in England can be taken to average about 120 acres (48.5ha), but there are wide disparities between regions. How it was measured in early medieval times is more difficult: it was either a unit of productivity, of extent, or of tax liability. A hide contained 4 virgates. The term is often encountered when working with early medieval documents in relation to archaeologically derived settlement patterns.

Explanation:
Ya que en el contexto no cabe decir todo lo sugerido por los compañeros. La medida puede ser cualquiera de las citadas desde que no hay un patrón fijo para esto.
