As with all these schemes, the parent isotope (potassium 40 in this case) is decaying to a daughter element (argon 40) and it is assumed that one can measure the amounts accurately in the rock today, that the logarithmic rate of decay is known and stays the same, that there is ***no contamination of the rate from another source*** of these two elements over the supposed long period of decay and that no daughter element entered at the time of crystallisation.

Si en una muestra se dan lugar varios procesos de desintegración radiactiva simultáneamente (diferentes modos de desintegración), la tasa de desintegración global será diferente que si se produce por un solo modo. En concreto, la constante de desintegración "aparente" será la suma de las constantes de desintegración de los diversos modos de desintegración que haya.
En este caso el potasio 40 puede desintegrarse a argón 40 por captura electrónica pero también a calcio 40 por desintegración beta.

De hecho en este caso, quizá mejor que "a causa de otra fuente", sería mejor "a causa de otros posibles modos de deintegración". En cualquier caso, debería leer todo el texto para saber exactamente a qué conclusión quiere llegar. |
