Termed ‘kettles’ these circular shapes sometimes occur in the roof of a mine and are in fact the bottoms of upright tree trunks. If the lower parts, including the roots, are mined away, then there are dangers of it falling and crushing the miners underneath. The fascinating and instructive lesson is that these tree trunks are often very long, extending up through more than one layer of strata. They are then termed Polystrate fossils and these particular types are themselves proof that all the strata were laid ***at a similar period separated at the very most by*** a year or so, and probably not separated by more than a few days. |
