El carbono tiene un isótopo de peso atómico 12 y uno menos frecuente de peso atómico 14, que es radiactivo. Cuando un ser viviente muere se empieza a desintegrar el carbono 14, de modo que midiendo la proporción entre ambos se puede determinar el tiempo transcurrido desde la muerte del ser viviente.
