Estoy traduciendo un artículo sobre las bicicletas Bickerton, escrito por un arquitecto y me sale el siguiente texto:

The poetics of the contrasting skirt and bike is clear, and is used by Banham as a paradigm of architecture, celebrating English engineering as a foil to the antique fashions of Edwardian style.

El punto es que ese "foil" me complica: ¿se refiere a que la ingenieria inglesa arruinó o frustró el viejo estilo Eduardo o que simplemente lo reemplazó?
