Pick up stitches: Put tip of needle through front of loop of the slipped stitch along the edge

I'm translating a knitting pattern and there is this note about the pick up stitches. I don't quite understand the above phrase.

En éste caso se refiere a la aplicación del levante de las puntadas omitidas mientras se tejía o de hacer puntos de un patrón. La frase indica:"Levantamiento de puntadas: introduzca la aguja por el frente de la puntada saltada a lo largo del filo del punteado. Estas se hacen para terminar la pieza con una orilla pareja o para añadir cintas a la orilla del tejido.

agree  Jennie Knapp: sí, es borde u orillo. Cuando uno teje se dice levantar/retomar los puntos del borde o del orillo. :)
