la élite laica // entre la élite no-versada Explanation: hello julia, in this case, layman could refer both to somebody who is not educated (no-versado) in a certain issue or to a non-ordained member of a church (laico or seglar). In the past the implications of "educated" were to be a part of a both cultural and social elite - those who could afford this "good education". This I would keep as 'élite' in Spanish. As to which is the correct meaning of "layman" here, I would think it is the religion-linked definition, since mythology would have been considered as a part of pagan belief and could be more reasonably associated with laymen in this sense.
