grandioso, imponente, tremendo

Explanation:
En el contexto de "personality," ser "larger than life" es ser grandioso, imponente, tremendo. Literalmente quiere decir ser más grande que la realidad.

SER EXAGERADO

Explanation:
I've found Harrap's Dictionary to be excellent in translating common phrases from one languge to another. In this case anything but ser exagerado would not make sense to the spanish reader. To translate larger than life literally would leave the reader going -HUH? I hope this helps! Good luck!

Mayor que la vida misma / Más grande que la vida misma

Explanation:
El Señor Harraps seguro que no vivió nunca en España, o no tuvo muchos amigos, puesto que "larger than life" como expresión ha existido en español desde siempre. "Ser exagerado"... huy! Me duele hasta de pensar en ello. ;-) Lo siento.

De hecho está tan asentada como para permitir jugar con ella: yo y mis amigos solemos usarla para hablar de la "gran" personalidad de alguna chica un poco gordita. :-D

"lo más importante", ...

Explanation:
I would use this expression in instances like these:
"She's larger than life": ella es lo más importante en mi vida.
"That elephant is larger than life": ése elefante es enoooooooooooooooooooooorme. (Una exageración a no ser que sea una amoeba subdesarrollada la que lo dice).
"The elephant man was a larger than life person": el hombre elefante era una persona que se salía de lo corriente". Larger than life greetings... :)

    1st example: her. 2nd example:exaggerated wildlife
    3rd example: shorter

it's NOT a question of size

Explanation:

To say someone is larger than life is not to say that they are bigger in size terms, or that they are more important than life.

It's to say that someone is more real/alive than life itself (as you had imagined it), and:

in the case of personality...
'X has a larger than life personality' is like saying 'es más vivo que la vida misma'

in the case of seeing something large for the first time, 'I saw the boa larger than life, moving away...' is like saying 'much más grande de lo que imaginaba'
