It was like a witch hunt without executions. Please don't suggest anything such as "manía maricona," which sounds more like a fantastic wild night out in the Village than societal oppression.

bchavez and C Shaw: Useful answers, but "manía" means several different things nowadays in Spain. It's just a bit too trendy for a serious historical work.

mongo: "Pederasta" is "child molester", nothing else. EU statistics prove that 92% of child molesters choose victims of the opposite sex. Mistaken beliefs such as yours led to the pansy craze, by the way...

Based on these key words, I come to the same conclusion as the 1st contributor....'hunt'would imply mobs, i.e. not orchestrated/ organised (at least, visibly).

However, the original is more slang-like, yet you seem not to want to use what you dicarded yourself.
But maybe you could use 'maricón' combined with a form of 'persecución', 'acoso', 'castigar', 'victimizar', 'victimización'..
