The boy is tough as in fuerte, not duro. This expression in English has a lot of emphasis on the fact that although he looks shy and quiet, he´s really a strong boy for having been through many tragedies.
Any ideas on expressing this in Spanish?

Son muchas las opciones que se me ocurren. Los puntos suspensivos los añadí para dar énfasis a "fuerte".
También podría ser:
"Éste es un niño tranquilo, pero fuerte".
Normalmente no coloco el signo coma (,) antes de "pero" pero en este caso sí para indicar una cláusula que modifica a toda la expresión "Éste es un niño tranquilo".
