Several excellenet answers. Ruth's fun facts were enlightening to really understand that this idiom is to focus on the common folk, of all flavors and colors, as so nicely worded by Oso. A literal translation or one that is lexically accurate is less relevant to me in the case of idioms than one that embodies the spirit itself, and, if possible, includes rhyme when it has such rhyme in the original. Since I was not creative enough to do it on my own, I elicited your help and your contributions have been fantastic. I would like to recognize Dan for his accuracy and am glad he picked up so many Browniz for his contribution, and Oso for his creativity, along with Ruth for his enlightenment. Si se trata de una rima infantil, se intenta utilizar el lenguaje familiar. Nadie se referiría al oficio de quien vende velas como \'fabricante de candelas\', sino que diría: ahí viene el candelero (velero no se usa, concuerdo con María Eugenia)

los carniceros, los panaderos y los que hacen los candeleros


Explanation:
poniendo todo en plural y cambiando "fabricar" por "hacer" que es más fácil de entender para un nino creo que rima mejor y además conserva el ritmo (de algún modo). Además creo que se puede "cantar" con facilidad.

Fun Facts


Explanation:
This is not a translation or equivalent phrase, but some more background on the nursery rhyme it comes from. My take is that it is a reference to ordinary working people, as opposed to clerical or noble classes.

Rub-a-dub-dub
Three men in a tub;
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
They all jumped out of a rotten potato,
Turn 'em out, knaves all three!

Origin
A sideshow attraction at local fairs used to be three maids in a tub who were presumably unclothed and were featured in an early version of this rhyme. It's possible this rhyme made fun of the men who enjoyed visiting them!

The other version went as follows:-

Hey rub-a-dub,
Ho rub-a-dub,
Three maids in a tub,
And who do you think was there?
The butcher, the baker,
The candlestick maker;
And all of them gone to the fair.
[which could be a pun on the fair 'feria' and the fair 'las hermosas.'

As for the rotten potato reference, it could be related to the following.

Irish children used to carve out potatoes and turnips and light them for their Halloween gatherings. As legend has it, these "jack-o-lanterns" commemorated Jack, a shifty Irish villain so wicked that neither heaven nor the Devil wanted him. Rejected by both the sacred and profane, he wandered the world endlessly looking for a place to rest, his only warmth a glittering candle in a rotten potato.

When I was growing up and it was time to share a bathtub with my sister, my mother would often say, "Last one in is a rotten potato!"
