Consequently the large distances and the age of the universe are a deduction from a major (unproved) assumption that the Big Bang cosmology (the fashionable view today) is correct. In other words, ***we get out what we put in***. Parts of that cosmology do seem plausible. The redshift of stars would seem superficially to be explained by the idea of expansion away from us (with the consequent implication of vast distances) but it is an odd fact that there is significant quantisation of redshift, that is the redshift of galaxies clusters around definite values
