Another set of calculations suggested that a particular binary X-ray source, called Cygnus X-1, might be fairly faint, fairly close, and have only a common, old neutron star as its X-ray emitter. Annoyed colleagues immediately set out to disprove this by measuring an approximate distance to the object. Sure enough, it was distant and bright, hence massive, and the **accretor was the first, firmest case for a black hole in our galaxy. This was one of about 4 papers that had both Joe Weber and me as authors, out of hundreds each that we published over the years. |
