Explanation:
Early European settlers to the Lake Superior area called the large form of Lake Superior native brook trout a "coaster" because of its preference for shoreline habitat in the lake. In this report, we employ the definition of coaster used by Becker (1983) as "any brook trout that spends part of its life in Lake Superior".

La trucha arcoiris de San Pedro Mártir, Oncorhynchus mykiss nelsoni (Evermann), es endémica de la pendiente occidental de la Sierra San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, México (Miller 1950, Ruiz-Campos & Pister 1995), y del complejo taxonómico arcoiris-costera, es considerada la población autóctona más sureña en Norteamérica (Smith 1984, Behnke 1992). Esta subespecie, cuyo estatus de conservación es el de "preocupación especial" debido a su confinada distribución y baja abundancia (Williams et al. 1989, Ruiz-Campos & Pister 1995), se caracteriza por su corta longevidad (²4 años), talla pequeña (<260 mm longitud patrón [LP]), baja fecundidad (promedio= 15.34 ovocitos/cm LP), madurez sexual precoz (1 año), conducta no migratoria [población interior o aislada], y su capacidad euritérmica durante verano en su habitat natural (rango diario= 14.0 a 24.6 oC) (Ruiz-Campos 1993).
