English term or phrase: Bananas in the EU
We are involved in a document about the banana trade and the EU. Would the preferred word for "banana" be "plátanop" or "banana"?
And in the context of EU trade in bananas, what would the abbreviation ACP stand for? Asociación Carbeño de Plataneros, maybe?

Spanish translation:Plátano y ACP
Explanation:
The preferred word in Spain is "plátano", and ACP does not anything to do with "plátano".

Here you have the definition of ACP, and some links to Web Sites in Spanish where you'll find both the words ACP and "plátano":

Países ACP:

"Estados de África, del Caribe y del Pacífico que han establecido con la Unión Europea un acuerdo de asociación económica y cooperación comercial. Estos países eran colonias de los miembros del Mercado Común, y por ello se les aplica un tratamiento comercial preferente. Una vez adquirida su independencia, los nuevos Estados decidieron continuar su asociación con la CEE, y así se formó el grupo de Estados."

"African, Caribbean and Pacific Island states that have established agreements with the European Community on economic and trade cooperation. Former colonies Common Market members that therefore receive preferential treatment. After becoming independent, the new states decided to continue their association with the EEC. After the entry of the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark, a new agreement was signed with the ACP, representing 65 African Caribbean and Pacific Island states on 28th February 1975 in Lomé, Togo."

If you are translating for the U.S. or Latin America the word to use is:

Explanation:
Banano. Platano is used to define another sort of let us call it fruit (plantain), which is green and eaten by almost all Latin Americans (Colombian, Cuban, Puerto Rican, etc.), besides, commercially it always referred as Banano.

Good Luck!
