Explanation:
This is the official term and is used by credit unions in Puerto Rico, Central America, the Dominican Republic and most South American countries. "Cooperative" was not used in the U.S., because a savings and loan association (like a building society in British countries) first used the term "cooperative" for their institution and an alternative had to be found. I was the staff interpreter and translator for the World Council of Credit Unions (in Spanish, "Consejo Mundial de Cooperativas de Ahorro y Crédito").
