Term Context1.1.1 PATHOPHYSIOLOGY OF FRAGILE X SYNDROME The primary molecular basis underlying FXS is a reduced expression level or lack of FMRP. FMRP is a cytoplasmic messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) binding protein expressed in several cell types including neurons [10]. The reduced or absent FMRP is caused most commonly by an increased number of trinucleotide cytosine-guanine-guanine (CGG) repeats in the FMR1 gene, resulting in hypermethylation of CpG regulatory sites (short stretches of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) with a high frequency of CG sequences), which prevents transcription and leads to either partial or full silencing of gene expression [11]. muchas gracias!! => muchas gracias!!
