Term Context(penúltima línea) Extreme behavioral dysfunction and a degree of social dysfunction often accompany mental retardation [15]. These problematic issues faced by families of affected individuals often manifest as excessive shyness, poor eye contact, and anxiety, particularly social anxiety [3]. Compulsive and perseverative behaviors, seen in both males and females, tend to increase with age; stereotyped movements such as hand flapping are also common. Behavioral dysfunction varies by gender and age from puberty throughout young adulthood, with hyperactivity and aggressive outbursts occurring in approximately 90% and 30% of males, respectively [16]. As females with FXS tend to have better cognitive function and less hyperactivity, shyness, social withdrawal and mood lability is more evident. Anxiety is an extremely common and pronounced symptom of FXS in both males and females, commonly induced by novelty or difficulty in making transitions; panic attacks are also common. Additionally, autistic symptoms are common, with 30% of male FXS children meeting criteria for Autism and an additional 20-30% meeting Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS) criteria [3]. Most patients with FXS have higher social functioning, show less of a deficit in facial and emotional recognition and the proportion of FXS patients diagnosed with autism typically declines with age [16]. => (penúltima línea)
