En este contexto, la expresión 'particulate matter' designa lo que en castellano solemos llamar simplemente partículas.
En la versión española de la Farmacopea Europea (Ph. Eur.), traducida del inglés, en la Real Farmacopea Española (que actualmente es la copia fiel de la Ph. Eur.) y en la Farmacopea Argentina (muy similar, en muchos casos, a la Ph. Eur.) este ensayo se denomina "ensayo de recuento de partículas".
En mi opinión, la palabra "ensayo" puede omitirse; basta con decir "recuento de partículas" (un recuento es una prueba o ensayo).
Ahora bien, yo no traduciría 'water for particulate matter test' como "agua para (el ensayo de) recuento de partículas", sino simplemente como "agua exenta de partículas", tal como figura en la Ph. Eur.
