el significado es siempre el mismo, pero me da la impresión que poner que algo es similar pero diferente resulta como que no tiene mucho sentido, o es similar o es diferente.
yo lo refrasearía como puse en el título, "...es similar a ... ero/aunque con algunas diferencias", o hasta "...es similar a ... aunque no totalmente".
una idea :o)

al final encontré que "similar-yet-different" es lo mismo que "like-but-not-identical-with".
como sugerías, las cosas son o no son diferentes y esto de son similares pero diferentes suena muy raro. pues claro, si son similares no son iguales!
