Buenas tardes:

Estoy traduciendo una serie norteamericana. La frase la dice un chico. No estoy segura de si quiere decir que él tenía cara de estar alucinando, de si la estaba mirando fijamente o simplemente si estaba absorto. No hay más contexto porque es una de esas intervenciones que salen al final del capítulo.

One time she caught me staring off and she goes, "What's wrong? You look like a deer in headlights."

Me parece que sería preferible una traducción que exprese lo que ella ve: que él está mirando un poco al vacío, con la mirada fija pero sin mirar nada en particular. Implica que está absorto, ensimismado. Creo que "con la mirada perdida" lo expresa bastante bien.
