En la lista de especificaciones de una impresora en red, aparece la frase siguiente:

Sé que el significado de "piggy-back" es "cargar a cuestas". Pero quisiera saber cómo se llama este tipo de hardware controlador para impresoras.

Nota: digo "hardware" porque en los materiales técnicos siempre distinguen entre "driver" (controlador de software) y "controller" (controlador de hardware). Y de lo que están hablando aquí es de una especie de servidor de impresión externo que se conecta a la máquina, donde llegan los comandos de impresión desde las PC conectadas en red, para procesarlos y luego pasarlos a la impresora propiamente dicha.
